While the pandemic has impacted several industries and businesses across the globe, the world’s 500 richest people have gotten richer.
As per the Bloomberg Billionaire’s Index, the world’s 500 richest people have gained $809 billion this year, a 14 per cent increase since January.
The world’s richest man Jeff Bezos, Founder of Amazon.com Inc., has reached a net worth of $202 billion this week due to the rise in the share price of the world’s biggest online retailer. This makes him the first person to cross $200 billion mark. The 56-year-old’s net worth has risen by 75 per cent, a total of $87 billion this year till date.
Amazon is one of the few companies to have benefitted from the pandemic as more and more people are turning to online shopping for anything and everything, including daily necessities. Bexoz’s ex-wife MacKenzie Scott, who owns 4 per cent of Amazon’s shares, is the 13th richest person in the world with a net worth of $66.2 billion
Elon Musk, at number four in the world’s richest list, has entered the clique of centibillionaires this week. Electric car maker Tesla Inc. share value rose by 4.5 per cent on Wednesday, taking his net worth to $101 billion as reported by Bloomberg. Musk’s fortune has grown by $73.5 billion, a 267 per cent growth in the year till date.
Analysts expect Tesla’s stock’s price, which has already risen 900 per cent this year, to soar in the next 12 months. Telsa’s share will undergo a 5-1 stock split on August 31.
The other two centibillionaires – Bill Gates at number two and Mark Zuckerberg at number three in the list have also seen a rise in their wealth.
Bill Gates has a net worth of $124 billion. His assets grew 9.9 per cent in the year till date.
The Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg’s assets grew 46.4 per cent in the year till date.
Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, who had risen to fourth spot earlier this month, is now currently the seventh richest person in the world with $81.8 billion. His assets grew 38.3 per cent in the year.
