Once every two months, JW Marriott Sahar’s spacious The Spa by JW brings new treatments to the table for the guests, which are available along with the existing therapies. This month, they have good old Ayurveda on the menu, in collaboration with Kochi-based RCM Ayurveda Wellness Centre.
“Keeping in mind Ayurveda’s tridosha concept, these limited-edition therapies are designed to relax, rejuvenate and focus on the imbalance of the doshas in the body,” says Sanaya Bhathena, Assistant Spa Manager, Spa by JW.
Sreekumar MK, Executive Assistant Manager, RCM Wellness Centre, explained, “The human body primarily has three doshas (elements)—vata, pitta and kapha that fluctuates depending on several factors including—food, seasons, diet and sleep. In order for a person to stay healthy and de-stressed, it is vital to balance out these three fundamental doshas.” He adds that lack of balance leads to ailments, tensed muscles and spike in stress levels.
There are five therapies available on this menu – Abhayanga Massage, Shirobhayanga (Indian head massage), Shirodhara, Ayurveda Stress Reduction Package (Abhyanga massage & Shirodhara) and Ayurveda Stress Reduction Package (Abhyanga massage & herbal poultice).
The procedure for these therapies is quite authentic. Sreekumar, the well-trained Ayurveda master, sits down with the guests and asks them a set of questions around the kind of food they consume, their sleep patterns, pain in the body, stress levels and more. Depending on the answers and his knowledge of the ancient Indian science, he informs them about their dominant and docile doshas. “Based on my analysis, I recommend the massage needed, but of course, guests are free to choose,” informs Sreekumar.
A concoction of herbs and oils that has therapeutic and medicinal benefits, are used. “We are using a mix of Dhanwantharam Thailam, Murivenna, Karpooradi Thailam and Ksheerabala Thailam for the massages. These are made by mixing more than 50 herbs and have great medicinal benefits.”
Considering that my body’s dominant doshas are pitta and vatta, Sreekumar suggested that I should try the Ayurveda Stress Reduction Package (Abhyanga massage & Shirodhara). The Ayurveda master shared an interesting point about Abhyanga – that it is the first-ever body massage in the world. “Swedish massage is considered as the first massage of the modern world, while Abhyanga is the first massage from the ancient world,” he said.
Abhyanga started with pouring warm medicated oil all over the body, followed by a 30-minute rigorous massage, with moderate pressure. The massage movement was in the direction of the movement of the arterial blood (direction of the body hair), to better the blood circulation of my body. As per Ayurveda, this massage eliminates toxins, balances the nervous system, reduces pain in the joints and improves the sleep cycle. It eased up my muscles that had become tense over time, due to my sedentary lifestyle.
This was followed by Shirodhara, where warm therapeutic oil was poured on my forehead in a thin and steady stream. Every few minutes, my skilled masseuse applied pressure on my scalp to relax me further and for a good 45-minutes, I experienced a meditative-level of relaxation.
Shirodhara is known to relieve anxiety, reduce headache and rejuvenate the body. I vouch for these benefits because my pesky headache and consistent pain around my eyes have now disappeared. A quick 15-minute Indian head massage after this and I was good to go for a sauna session and a quick shower. My 90-minute massage ended with a cup of Invigorate tea.
These Ayurvedic massages are available till the end of this month.
