BY ISMAT TAHSEEN As brides prepare for Day 0, bridal retreats offer a chance to take a breather, while getting a glow-up How brides are embarking on beauty getaways before the Big Day JET SET GO There’s little that comes close to being more important for a bride-to-be than looking her best on her wedding day. Swirling around a gorgeous lehenga, having close family and friends around and a picture-perfect backdrop are all ingredients for picture-perfect nuptials, bolstered by her feeling confident with her glow. The customary facials and calorie-busting fitness plans have been di rigeur, but of late, the trend of the bride-to-be and her gal pals heading out to a scenic resort or retreat for a glow-up getaway is increasingly currying favour. They take on some pre-wedding fun in the way of spa wraps and massages, circulation-boosting yoga and pilates classes, personalised skin care consultations, detox menu indulgences and more – all meant to prep and nourish the skin in the countdown to D-Day. With the shaadi season upon us, we delved into the whole world of pre-wedding beauty — from getting first-hand accounts from brides-to-be who’ve been there done that, to checking out resorts that have special regimens and top dermatologists on what is in demand. she makes time to chat on how it went, “I just got back from my pre-wedding beauty getaway with nine of my girlfriends. I chose the resort, the Bodrum Edition as it’s a beautiful and serene property with all-white interiors, just the way I like it. We had our own villa with a private pool. Of course, we headed to the spa and that made for such a fabulous indulgence. We tried the new signature Black Tea scent massage oil, which was a complete relaxation for all of us and the other regimens also helped us get the glow on. The plan involved a flow of activities. For instance, one day, we just took a yacht one day and got into the beautiful blue waters, which was such a zen feeling! For me, being in the space of beautiful interiors always makes me feel calmer, especially if it’s around subtle, modern, minimalist interiors and the Bodrum Edition gave me that. It was kind of my way of getting my restful beauty break before the wedding prep rush begins.” Harshita Rai Khetan, owner of the Skin Diet Company, who also indulged in pre-wedding TLC, shares her own advice that will resonate with every bride-to-be: being consistent with skincare. “I had my beauty routine in place before my rokka ceremony. I think that really helped me on so many counts. For one, I was getting married at Umaid Bhawan in Jodhpur and so we were required to do a lot of recces to the venue. Second, the weather was hot then and it wasn’t easy because as a bride-to-be you’re stressed as you’re planning everything. Also, you end up travelling a lot, eating a lot of food with the wedding menu tasting approvals going on, which includes taking in taking all the sugar and fried stuff in the world. In that scenario it can be very hard to maintain a beauty routine, but my consistent beauty and skincare regimen helped me a lot. As a practice, whenever I got the chance, I would apply sunscreen, the right moisturizer and the serum, which is a specially curated recipe from my company.” That said, she made plans for some skin pampering before D-Day. “I came across really good pre-bridal facial packages and I got two facials before my wedding, which were great.” She underlines her advice with a parting note: “I have always believed that skincare is not a one-night show; it is how consistent you are with it. These facials and other bridal beauty regimens should be done it every single week or somewhere close to that.” Dermatologists play a key role Of course, the pre-bridal getaway glow is a thing, but it has to also sustain post the wellness holiday. This entails wellness-centric dining experience mirrors the wellnessfocused aspirations of our guests, adding a delectable and wholesome dimension to their pre-wedding wellness sojourn.” The First-Ever Retreat That Brought Together Brides-To-Be Ekta Shah, founder of House of Eekkta, came up with the innovative idea of retreat called Here Comes the Bride, which will have brides-to-be converge for a restorative break. This September, it saw 38 brides-to-be come together for wellness, beauty, and mental health masterclasses, meant to inspire them and help them feel empowered. She shares more on the energy and fun from the getaway. “It was such a thriving atmosphere; we had a beauty partner Juicy Chemistry as well as make-up artist Kajol Paswwan share advice how to take of the skin pre-wedding and post wedding events. A dermatologist was also present to give tips on how to start one’s skincare routine and more. It was evident how young women really enjoyed being a part of the whole programme. They had so many questions and tried different products. I think you can get lost in a plethora of stuff on the internet but at the retreat when you sit down and share experiences together, it helps streamline things. It becomes a safe haven for the brides, a kind of community where they can be themselves and forge bonds with each other. It’s a kind of educative bachelorette.” This first retreat also had a mixology masterclass. She says, “While we’re looking at breaking stereotypes, I thought why not set the level higher and go beyond the usual baking and cooking.” With the first retreat a success, Ekta is planning to do this twice a year. “Hopefully next year, we will do two getaways where we go to different parts of the country, maybe a fun retreat in Goa and then, plan an international stay,” she adds. What brides have to share These brides-to-be share how they made plans flitting between wedding planning and work. Sanjana Arora, Director at D’Décor, has recently returned from her dreamy pre-bridal beauty getaway at the Bodrum Edition, considered a jewel in the Turkish Riviera, set amidst the serene beauty of the Turkish Riviera, with its infinity pool, garden lounge, fitness centre and state-of-the art spa and Turkish Hammam. She loved every minute of it. a lot of effort, which includes knowing what go in for. Top dermatologists reveal their navigation strategies for bridesto-be on charting through the sea of different treatments. They also share key advice on when is the right time to embark on the beauty getaway and what therapies are hot. When to start Dr Stuti Khare, M.D. Dermatologist, Founder of Elements of Aesthetic, affirms the trend and says, “Pre-bridal beauty is becoming increasingly popular, and with so many treatments available, it’s no wonder why. From improving skin and hair health to achieving ideal body weight, everyone wants to look their best on their big day. However, most treatments require multiple sessions to provide the best results and bookings are often made six months in advance Plus, every individual has different needs, issues to address, and goals to achieve. Therefore, it’s essential to plan your skincare routine, ideally three to six months before you start.” She adds why it can’t be a last-minute rush to get some crash-beauty plans into your schedule., “Many people who are planning their destination wedding are concerned about how their skin will look once they arrive at the destination, as the climate can be quite different there. As the wedding date approaches, getting enough sleep becomes a challenge. Therefore, my only advice is to avoid any severe treatments as the wedding day draws near. Hydrate well, rest well, maintain your skincare routine and don’t make any changes in your skincare routine or treatment at the last moment.” Dr Madhu Chopra, ace dermatologist and actress Priyanka Chopra’s mother also adds: “Preparing for a wedding is an important process that should start three to six months in advance. For brides, laser hair reduction is a recommended option for hygiene and comfort. It’s also important to customize skincare routines based on skin type, including getting adequate sleep, drinking enough water, following a diet rich in fruits, scheduling regular cleanups and medical facials, and treating any scars.” Dr Kiran Sethi sounds a note of caution: “For brides with specific skin concerns like pigmentation, acne, enlarged pores, and scars, a more comprehensive skincare approach is needed. Ideally, a three-month lead time before the wedding is recommended to address these concerns effectively with targeted treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser therapy can make a significant difference in achieving flawless skin,” she says. Micro-needling to thread lifts: What’s popular Dr Chopra says, “If you’re planning a resort holiday, it’s important to make sure your skin is ready for beach activities. Achieving a hair-free body and an even skin tone can add to the charm of your holiday, and body polishes can make your skin radiant. Using vitamins, antioxidants, hydrating moisturizers, sunscreen, and vitamin C serums can also make your skin look beautiful and healthy. Dr Khare breaks down the two types of treatments: dermatologytreatments and cosmetictreatments. She explains, “Dermatology treatments are necessary if you’re dealing with issues like acne, hair loss, or other skin or hair problems. If you want to undergo healing treatments, it’s important to start at least six months early, if not earlier, as they often require multiple sessions. These include PRP, Microneedling, Lasers for scar and pigmentation reduction, etc. On the other hand, cosmetic treatments include peels, brightening facials, laser hair reduction, Botox, Fillers, Threadlift, HIFU (High intensity focused ultrasound), Body Sculpting and even IV drips. Nowadays, many people are opting for IV glutathione drips to enhance overall health. There are various types of IV drips available for different purposes, such as anti-ageing, energy, and weight loss. Laser hair reduction is another popular treatment that almost every bride and groom opts for, in order to have hair-free skin. Many also take supplements like glutathione, vitamin C, multivitamins, and amino acids, as all of these can help make the skin look brighter and improve its suppleness.” Key advice: Also look to address long-term concerns While getting that pre-bridal glow we all want for our big day, let’s go deeper than opting for pre-bridal vacations that include spa treatments and salon facials to relax and rejuvenate, says Dr Sethi. “These treatments may provide temporary benefits, but they often fall short of addressing deeper skin concerns such as pigmentation, acne, pores, and scars. It’s better to explore a more holistic approach to prebridal skincare and wellness, highlighting treatments that offer long-lasting results and enhance not just the wedding day, but the honeymoon and through life beyond. “ Pictures courtesy: Sanjana Arora Pictures courtesy: Camlition Productions Pictures courtesy: Camlition Productions 14|LUXEBOOK|OCTOBER 2023 OCTOBER 2023 |LUXEBOOK|15

only the face, ask for body treatments for a head-to-toe glow. “Your body needs the right pampering, too! Silklove, Cloudskin, and DMF (Deep Moisturizing Facials) are exceptional options that can deliver fabulous results even after a single session. These treatments hydrate the skin, improve tone and texture, and provide a radiant, youthful appearance that complements the bridal look,” she shares. Why IV Drips are grabbing the fancy of late A much-coveted regimen with brides-to-be is the IV Drip. This intravenous therapy (IV) delivers fluids, vitamins, and minerals directly into the bloodstream. As this this is direct delivery system, it allows for higher concentrations of nutrients to be absorbed more quickly than oral supplementation, as it bypasses the digestive system. It is aimed at hydrating, brightening and energising the skin. When Meghna Bhimrajka, marketing professional decided to tie the knot, she had this therapy in mind to try. She reveals, “For me, the whole idea of having a beauty regime before the wedding was like the icing on the cake. It was a treat for me and added that bit of extra fun and pampering to my whole wedding run-up experience. It made me feel even more excited and confident about the big day.” Her pre-beauty wellness regimen was unique. “I frequent the Ageless Clinic in Mumbai and since I had my full confidence in Dr Harshana Bijlani from the clinic, I decided to try this beauty drip in preparation for my big day. I decided to undergo The Glow Boost IV Therapy, a powerful mix of antioxidants along with essential minerals and vitamins that can give your skin an instant boost, as well as a laser treatment to address facial marks and I also indulged in a Red Carpet Facial, as I had heard a lot about how it’s such a fabulous pick-me-up. I have to say I loved the IV therapy; it delivered outstanding hydration, leaving me with a glowing complexion perfectly in the days preceding all the wedding functions. It worked so impressively that I’ve continued with the treatment even post-wedding. In fact, I even arranged a session of these treatments for my friends during the wedding festivities,” she shares. Dr Kiran Sethi shares more on this trend. “Wedding preparations can be physically and mentally draining. In addition to skincare treatments, IV drips for hydration, energy, and glow can be a game-changer.These intravenous therapies deliver essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream, ensuring brides stay energized, hydrated, and radiant throughout the hectic wedding preparations.” But there’s a lot to know about this regimen, so what are the dos and don’ts with it? With the wedding season approaching, several high-end wellness salons are rolling out luxe beauty packages that are in hot demand. Myrah, a premium wellness hideaway in Mumbai, has curated the perfect bridal bundle for the prewedding skin prep, with the Advanced Bridal Package – that includes a luxury hair treatment, colour, manicure and pedicure at INR 47,500 and the Spa - Bridal Bliss with a body polish, lymphatic drainage massage, envelopment and a Royal Aura Bath at INR 18,200, among other regimens. Wellness packages Approach with caution Dr Nishita Ranka, internationally acclaimed dermatologist, Medical Director & Founder of Dr. Nishita’s Clinic for Skin, Hair & Aesthetics has more. She states,“The appeal of IV drips for brides is understandable given the desire for a glowing appearance and increased energy. However, while certain IV formulations may offer benefits, they should be approached with caution. It’s essential to understand that while some components of these drips have well-documented benefits when used in appropriate clinical settings, their widespread use for aesthetic or wellness purposes isn’t always backed by solid scientific evidence.” She further adds, “When we talk about safety and efficacy, one advantage of IV nutrient therapy is its 100% bioavailability, compared to the variable absorption rates of oral supplements which can be less efficient due to factors like gut health and metabolic rate. One potential risk is fluid overload, especially in those with certain medical conditions such as heart or kidney disease. Administering too much fluid too quickly can strain these organs. You also have to be careful of an imbalance of electrolytes. Rapidly introducing large quantities of fluids and minerals can disrupt the body’s electrolyte balance, potentially leading to conditions like hyperkalemia (elevated potassium levels) or hyponatremia (low sodium levels).” Amidst all the unwinding, beauty regimens, good vibes and community-building, Dr Madhu Chopra sums things up with a three-point advice: “The bride is the star of the wedding, and everyone wants her to look her best. While shopping and sun exposure can dehydrate the skin, staying hydrated inside and out is key to achieving a radiant glow. Adequate sleep and regular exercise can also help you prepare for all the cocktails and late-night dancing during the wedding festivities.” She shares what they are. “I think while addressing skin concerns is essential, brides looking for an all-encompassing glow can benefit from signature therapies that offer enduring results. Treatments like K-Glow, Power Facial, or Gold Plasma Therapy are designed to provide deep nourishment, enhance skin elasticity, and improve overall texture. These therapies go beyond surface-level pampering, ensuring that the radiant glow lasts not just through the wedding day but well into the honeymoon and even those post-wedding dinners.” It’s not Pictures courtesy: Sanjana Arora Bride Sanjana Arora took her squad to Turkey for a getaway 16|LUXEBOOK|OCTOBER 2023 OCTOBER 2023 |LUXEBOOK|17

Adorned with their love story As India continues to modernise, brides are seeking personalised jewellery to express their uniqueness and individuality. BY ARUSHI SAKHUJA Akina, Mumbai Indian wedding jewellery is a visual feast. Each region has its own jewellery traditions, representing a part of the country’s rich heritage through its art and aesthetics. Weddings and wedding trends in India are ever evolving and for the Indian bride, jewellery holds special significance. Be it heirloom pieces that have been passed on over generations or handpicked glistening diamonds, polki, emeralds and ruby jewellery sets, bridal jewellery donned by brides symbolizes not just adornment but also tradition, culture, and family heritage. The sparkle and shimmer of the jewellery enhances the beauty of the outfit, adding to her radiance. Indian wedding jewellery is not just decorative but carries a deeper meaning for some. Some women have been utilising their jewellery to tell her own story at the wedding. “Indian brides have evolved more creatively than perhaps in any other culture, over the past few decades. While this is an exposed generation not scared to experiment, it’s also one that finds pride in its Indian roots.” In recent times, the landscape of bridal jewellery has shifted, with an ever-increasing demand for personalization. Rajesh Sanghi, Director, Rosa Amoris says bridal jewellery personalisation demands undivided attention to the client’s needs from the minutest of details, to the completion of the whole trousseau. At Rosa Amoris, Sanghi says, “Every personalised jewellery has a concept behind it, a lot of emotion and thought process goes behind it. Something like this needs a handmade touch and finishing to make sure every part of the piece is given attention.” This trend, although challenging, is carving a unique identity for Indian brides, ushering in a new era of individuality and self-expression. Modern Indian brides today are more independent and self-assured than ever before. And while traditional heirlooms are beautiful, they may not always resonate with their own identity and story. Disha Shah, Founder, DiAi Designs is of the opinion that personalization is key to honouring cultural Shri Ram Hari Ram Jewellers Shri Ram Hari Ram Jewellers 18|LUXEBOOK|OCTOBER 2023 OCTOBER 2023 |LUXEBOOK|19 PERSONALISED JEWELLERY

customs. “Say a bride wants to wear her ‘maangtikka’ in a certain way yet wants to keep it stylish, that’s where personalization becomes a focal point. If another bride has a ‘chooda’ or ‘haath phool’ (delicate hand bracelet) she needs to wear but wants to blend it in well with an existing design, our styling team does just that.” Hence at DiAi Designs the brides’ choices lie at the cusp of personalisation. As the world gets more globalised, wedding traditions in India are also blending traditional customs with contemporary elements and the same is being carried to bridal jewellery. Brides want to strike a balance between honouring age-old traditions and embracing modern aesthetics. Some are choosing to incorporate elements from family heirlooms into their personalized jewellery, thereby preserving the legacy while adding a contemporary twist. Giving a nod to this statement Umang Gupta told LuxeBook, “Something as simple and age-old as the mangal-sutra is seeing a big comeback this decade. Personalized jewellery encourages traditional symbols like this to be worn with just a little adaptation of it to suit modern day attire. Similarly, the nath which was always seen in gold and polki and pearl, is returning in coloured stones, diamonds, as a septum ring, again, to be able to be worn by the current day bride. As heritage jewellers, we work hard and passionately to ensure that our traditional heirlooms don’t leave the mandap!” Bridal jewellery over the years Traditionally, Indian bridal jewellery has been synonymous with the concept of more is more – think grandeur, opulence, and a deep connection to cultural traditions. These exquisite pieces are often heirlooms and have been passed down through generations holding a sentimental value and each of them was crafted with meticulous attention to detail. “We integrate heirloom pieces of our client and blend them in a modern classical way, which keeps the traditional value and brings a new contemporary aspect towards it, which can be passed on to the next generation,” told Sanghi. While this kind of jewellery still has a strong hold in society, as India continues to undergo rapid modernization and cultural evolution, the preferences of brides have evolved as well. But Gupta still advises his clients to keep these pieces intact and not convert them into contemporary pieces. “Sometimes I advise my clients not to touch and amend these precious pieces. They were often made in more malleable gold and are treasures to be worn just the way they are. But sometimes, we are able to carefully modify an old piece into something more wearable for example, we modelled an old golconda diamond from a ring into a pendant with a meena halo outside and strung it into a bold chain.” Rajesh Sanghi, Director, Rosa Amoris, Atelier Jewellery Disha Shah, Founder, DiAi Designs Shri Ram Hari Ram Jewellers Caption missing... 20|LUXEBOOK|OCTOBER 2023 OCTOBER 2023 |LUXEBOOK|21

Today’s brides are increasingly looking for jewellery that not only reflects their cultural roots but also showcases their individuality and style. Thus, giving rise to the demand for personalized bridal jewellery. At Shri Ram Hari Ram Jewellers, Director, Umang Gupta says “personalization finds a new voice where we as jewellers are excited and trying to reinvent the wheel and serve styles that balance the old and the new. Examples of this are a beautiful polki headpiece that doubles up as a choker, a more practical and easier alternative to the mathapatti.” Brides are inclined toward unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that narrate their love story, and the ideology behind personalization lies in transforming jewellery into a narrative, a symbol, and an embodiment of the couple’s unique journey. Shah says that when a piece is personalised for a bride, that itself is a beautiful feeling because it’s a timeless treasure. One of the most prominent aspects amongst the myriad of bridal jewellery pieces, are wedding ring stands and personalised wedding rings are becoming more popular than ever. Now, personalisation is an artful expression for many brides. While some pick the simplest and most profound form of personalisation through engravings of their names, initials, or significant dates inside their wedding bands, other are channelling personalisation via selecting gemstones based on personal significance. Some others want completely unique wedding jewellery designs, and these brides collaborate with skilled artisans and jewellery designers to craft pieces that are exclusive to them. Yet another way to seek out personalisation is the use of metal for creating the pieces. Furthermore, another way to personalise a piece as highlighter by Gupta is based on the brides’ body type. He said, a petite bride doesn’t need three haars and a fuller bride can demand more majestic stones. It’s important hence to customise and personalise the pieces to make them look proportionate rather than jarring. To cater to the enormous growth in the sector, numerous jewellery brands in India are carving their niche to join the personalization movement. The challenges in personalizing bridal jewellery While the desire for personalized bridal jewellery is on the rise, it comes with its fair share of challenges. The most prominent challenge is striking a balance between tradition and personalization; many brides want to respect and honour their cultural heritage while also incorporating their unique tastes and preferences. “ Timelines are a challenge if personalization must happen soon as we need to ensure that the piece is practical and safe to wear. For example, earcuffs must be tackled keeping weight and proportions in mind, and not just something that looks good for one photo,” said Gupta. At DiAi Designs however, every member of our team is involved in the personalisation process both creatively and administratively. Hence, Shah also believes that the time consumed is a challenge. Sanghi in agreement with the statement quoted that “time is the most important challenge we face when it comes to customised/ personalised jewellery, especially when it is the wedding season, we make sure to keep our production bandwidth at full strength.” Another challenge is finding skilled artisans and jewellers who can execute these personalized designs flawlessly. Traditional jewellery-making techniques are often handed down through generations, and artisans may be more accustomed to creating traditional designs. Therefore, adapting these skills to cater to personalized requests can be a complex process. Cost is also a significant factor. Customized bridal jewellery can be more expensive than off-the-shelf options due to the additional labour and craftsmanship required. This cost factor often necessitates careful budgeting and planning on the part of the bride and her family. Looking ahead In the future, one can expect to see even more innovative approaches to personalization. Advanced technologies like 3D printing and virtual reality could be employed to create highly customized pieces. Furthermore, sustainability and ethical sourcing are likely to become integral components of the personalization process, with couples seeking jewellery that not only tells their story but also aligns with their values. While Sanghi advises brides to always good to customise pieces, Gupta leaves brides with valuable advice while considering personalized bridal jewellery for their wedding day, “Trust your vision but also trust your jeweller. Pick things that you can wear later, as these are expensive and special.” Traditional Indian Bridal Jewellery by Shri Ram Hari Ram Jewellers 22|LUXEBOOK|OCTOBER 2023 OCTOBER 2023 |LUXEBOOK|23
